In 2011, a local citizen from Middelfart – Mogens Rasmussen – approached the then Municipality Director of Middelfart Municipality and suggested doing Bridgewalking in the bridge structure of the Old Little Belt Bridge. Mogens Rasmussen had seen BaneDanmark’s personnel working at the top of the bridge structure and had thought it would be exciting to be allowed to go so high up. He was convinced when he was on holiday in Australia at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We should have that at Little Belt too.

Municipal Director Søren Andersen passes the idea on to Martin Albertsen, Chief of Staff at Middelfart Municipality. Martin Albertsen secures support for the collaborative project from Fredericia Municipality and establishes a small group across the two municipalities to work on the idea.

A joint application was sent to BaneDanmark on 7 November 2011, and on 24 February 2012, BaneDanmark replied, proposing to meet to explore the possibility of establishing a tourist attraction in the bridge structure while still maintaining the bridge as a vital traffic artery.

A business case and market study were prepared in the coming months, and applications were sent to the relevant bodies.

And finally, on 21 December 2012, the Ministry of Transport replied, with Minister Henrik Dam Kristensen giving his backing to the idea and writing that he was looking forward to following the project.

At the inauguration on 10 May 2015, it was no longer Henrik Dam Kristensen, who was Minister of Transport, but Magnus Heunicke. At the inauguration, he gave a speech, as did the two mayors, Jacob Bjerregaard (Fredericia Municipality) and Steen Dahlstrøm (Middelfart Municipality), the Australian ambassador Damien Miller and CEO of BaneDanmark Jesper Hansen, before Crown Princess Mary declared Bridgewalking open 60 metres above the Little Belt.

Mogens Rasmussen has been honoured several times for his idea. Here he was presented with the 2017 Fynske Bank Initiative Award:

A walk on the bridge should be a nice experience. We need to reach a height of 60 meters and to walk about 2.5 km. We have 2 hours to do so, including check-in and preparing for the walk. We have described the steps and stairs we will meet on the way below.

Stairwell tower

We begin by walking up a stairwell tower (22 + 39 steps) before reaching our first catwalk. At this point we will hook onto a safety rail.

Catwalk

The approx. 100 m catwalk takes us to our point of no return (30 meters above sea-level). The guide will at this point decide whether everyone will be able to continue on and finish the walk. If you do not want to continue, you will be hooked onto a different rail, so you can turn back. You can go visit our Welcome Centre till the rest of the group is back. Your ticket will sadly not be refunded in the case that you do not finish the walk.

First part of a double stairwell: 39 steps

Afterward, we continue up our next stairwell. The stairwell is double and divided into two sections of 39 and 28 steps respectively. We will use a safety mechanism that also makes it easier to get up the stairwell. The guide will explain the use of the safety mechanism when you reach the stairwell.

Second part of the double stairwell: 28 trin

Once we reach the top (48 m above sea-level) we usually take a small break before moving on to the footbridge. If you are out of breath from the stairwell, you will catch it again while enjoying the impressive view.

The bridge walk takes place on the old original deck (about 750 m on each side of the bridge). There is a guard rail, and your will be hooked onto the safety line of the bridge at all times during the walk.

To reach the eastern side of the bridge you need to go up a ladder and walk across a transverse catwalk.

The ladder up to the transverse catwalk: 7 steps

The ladder down from the transverse catwalk: 7 steps

The view from the transverse catwalk (Jutland):

On the eastern side of the bridge, we will make our return to Funen. To reach the eastern side of the bridge you once more need to cross via a transverse catwalk – which means going up (and down) a ladder again.

The view from the transverse catwalk (Funen):

To reach ground-level you once more need to walk down a double stairwell and the steps of the stairwell tower. All in all, it is a walk of about 2 km – and with about 280 steps up and down both stairwells and ladders.

Getting married is a unique experience in itself, but getting married at 60 metres above sea level – with an absolutely stunning view over the Little Belt, Jutland and Funen – sends you to the 7th heaven in more ways than one.

Wedding ceremony on the bridge and on land

There is room for 20 guests on each team, so it is possible to have up to 17 guests on the bridge in addition to yourself and the registrar. You walk in a line on the bridge and are secured by a safety line. You must be wearing the overalls provided, and therefore, it’s not possible to wear a dinner jacket or wedding dress. Instead, we allow you to decorate the overalls if you wish.

The minimum height for Bridgewalking is 140 cm, and the walk is not recommended for people with walking difficulties.

The wedding itself takes place in the middle of the bridge, while the exchange of rings and signing of marriage documents takes place on land. No loose objects are allowed on the bridge for safety reasons, so all guests can experience this part of the ceremony on land – gathered around the bridal couple.

Photos of the bride and groom during the wedding on the bridge can be arranged with Bridgewalking Little Belt. You cannot bring a regular camera, GoPro camera or camera phone. The guide takes photos with their phone, which are then uploaded to the website. If you do not want your private wedding photos published, please mention this in the conversation with Bridgewalking. If you would like a professional photographer, please contact Bridgewalking to discuss this.

The entire ceremony on the bridge and land lasts 2 hours.

To get married on the bridge, you must contact the Citizen Service Centre in either Fredericia or Middelfart Municipality, as well as Bridgewalking Little Belt, to arrange a wedding on the bridge.
